The profession of nursing is again facing another nursing shortage and even though we are in the midst of the current shortage, experts believe that it will reach crisis level in the next 10 to 15 years. As many of our colleagues prepare to retire and others leave the field for other reasons, nurses wonder who will care for them in their impending time of need. It is hard to understand how this incredible profession that allows us to intimately facilitate the human journey towards healing could be facing a shortage of articulate, caring individuals. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported recently that registered nursing led the list of the top occupations for projected job market growth between the years of 2002 and 2012 (U.S. Department of Labor, 2003).
