Unlike the joy from his other recent historic stroke, Edgar Martinez felt no glow last May.
His 500th career double sent Safeco Field in Seattle rocking and the Mariners to a win over the New York Yankees, but his 300th career homer and the three runs it brought in were lost--a last-hope stroke that flickered and faded in a Mariners' fourth straight defeat, 4-3, to the Minnesota Twins.
"It's not as enjoyable when you don't win," Martinez said quietly in a somber clubhouse. "The meaning of the 300th? Right now ... nah. Someday I can look back and enjoy it more. Right ...
