PATRICK BUCHANAN, editor emeritus of the American Conservative, has been, I think, a fine writer. At one time he looked like a strong and sensible voice in the fight/mainstream of US conservatism. However, he is now going further and further off the beam, at the cost of not only his own credibility but that of conservatism in a wider sense.

The American Conservative now has many positions indistinguishable from those of the far Left. In the issue of May 7, 2007, rapturously reviewing the book Rumsfeld: His Rise, Fall, and Catastrophic Legacy, by Andrew Cockburn, Martin Sieff wrote:
