Thousands of Nairobi commuters were stranded early Tuesday [7 April] morning as matatus [public transport minibuses] plying various routes went on strike. Matatu operators grounded their vehicles complaining of persistent harassment from the traffic police and city council askaris [guards]. Most operators in Nairobi are also forced to pay protection fees to the outlawed Mungiki sect.
