How can a free gift harm a baby? If it's a sample container of formula given to a new mother before she leaves the hospital then it can pose more harm than good.

Many organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, and the American Academy of Family Practice, recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the baby's first six months, yet the breastfeeding rate in this country is far short of national goals. Studies have shown that new mothers who receive free gift bags that include sample formula are less likely to exclusively breastfeed or reach the six-month goal than mothers who do not receive the free formula.
