IN 1591, A WOMAN NAMED Felipa de Souza was tortured and convicted by the Portuguese Inquisition in Brazil for having sexual relationships with other women.

More than 400 years later, lesbians are still under attack. During June 2000 in Sri Lanka, the National Press Council (a governmental body) called lesbianism "an act of sadism." In Nepal, police detained two young women involved with each other -- they were handed over by their own families, who forcibly took them to the authorities as a crowd of relatives and neighbors derided their behavior as shameful to their culture and religion. And in the United States, Jerry Falwell blamed lesbians and feminists, among others, for the recent attacks on the World Trade Center.
