A MAN has died after a fire ripped through his home.

The blaze started in the property in Cairnsmore Close, Walkergate, Newcastle, and is thought to have burnt itself out.

Police and fire crews were alerted by worried neighbours who hadn't seen the 58-year-old occupant for days.

They spotted smoke through the letterbox of the property just before 11am yesterday.

It is believed the fire may have started on Friday evening or early on Saturday morning.

The man was already dead by the time the fire and rescue service entered the house.
