TAIPEI, April 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan has managed to maintain its retail electricity prices at low levels despite drastic fluctuations in global fuel prices, according to a report released Tuesday by the state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower).
The report showed that the average retail price of electricity supplied to industrial consumers in Taiwan stood at NT$1.8331 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) in 2007, which was the third lowest among 26 countries selected by the company for comparison.
The price was higher only than Norway's NT$1.5052 per kwh and France's NT$1.7560 per kwh, but significantly lower than neighboring South Korea's NT$2.1637 per kwh, Indonesia's NT$2.1678 per kwh, Malaysia NT$2.2201 per kwh, Singapore's NT$3.5121 per kwh, and Japan's NT$6.2404 per kwh, the report stated
In terms of the average residential retail electricity price, the rate in Taiwan was NT$2.5855 per kwh in 2007, also the third lowest, behind Indonesia's NT$1.9901 per kwh and Malaysia's NT$2.3019 per kwh, according to the report
The rate compared closely to South Korea's NT$3.1985 per kwh, Singapore's NT$4.4842 per kwh and Japan's NT$5.7067 per kwh.
Meanwhile, the average revenue per kwh of electricity sold by Taipower -- calculated by dividing total annual revenue by total annual retail sales -- amounted to NT$2.1484 in 2007, the report showed.
