I WAS DELIGHTED TO READ "Neither Religious nor Civil" (Conscience, Summer/Autumn 2008) since it noted that the Catholic League has practiced the "art of media manipulation" to put forth its agenda. Recently, Bill Donohue manipulated Clark Hoyt, the Public Editor at the New York Times, into spreading lies about Terrence McNally's play "Corpus Christi." I was very upset with the Public Editor's intervention for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it gave credibility to Bill Donohue's outrageous claims about the play. I called the Public Editor to ask: i) If he had read or seen the play (since his description of it was largely inaccurate) and ii) If he had read or seen any of the literature Donohue had published about the play since everything contained in the League's literature was untrue and wildly inflammatory. I am sorry to say I never received a response back from Clark Hoyt at the Times. Donohue's tactics of manipulation were once again successful.
For what it's worth, you should know that I was raised Catholic and my family was very involved in the church when I was growing up. I take matters of faith very seriously but I am also an openly gay man who is prochoice. Part of the reason I fell in love with Terrence was because of the deep faith and spirituality evident in "Corpus Christi." You might say I was raised a "soup kitchen Catholic" and I'm very proud of it.
