Succeeding with the Masters Student Activity Book, Baroque Era, Vol. One and Succeeding with the Masters Teacher's Handbook, Baroque Era, Vol. One, by Helen Marlais with Kristen Avila. The FJH Music Company, Inc., 2008. www.fihmusic.com; (800) 262-8744. 48 pp. and 40 pp. respectively. $6. 95 each.
The Student Activity Book is designed for students in grades 4-8, who are playing compositions from the accompanying Performance Book, which includes compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Domenico Scarlatti. The Performance Book with CD includes biographies of the composers and a glossary from which the activities are drawn. The latter were not available for review.
The style of language usage is warm and genial but the grammar is not a model that 6th-grade English teachers would approve. Susan Hellard's water color illustrations are clever, spicey and capture the dress, architecture and decor of the 18th century.
Activities are appropriate for group settings, private lessons and assign ments for independent study and take the form of games and puzzles. Crossword puzzles and other vocabulary activities reinforce terminology.
