All hail spring's polished, painted face: vivid red lips, updated smoky eyes.
There was a timelet's call it the eightieswhen just waking up was an occasion for painted lips that could stop traffic and I-mean-business eyes. Eyeliner and a double coat of mascara were as much for day as for night, and the only shade of lipstick worth owning was red. If spring's runways are any evidence, strong makeup is back with all the power but a more refined, modernized punch. This season's clothes are sophisticated, celebratory, glamorous, and fun, and your makeup should be, too.
At shows like Oscar de la Renta, smoky eyes still smoldered, but with metallic browns instead of basic black. The effect: "Softness," said makeup artist Diane Kendal, busily lining, then smudging, a model's lids with M.A.C.'s Lucky Tom shadow backstage at Carolina Herrera. For lips, red takes back its title, but this time the choices are endless: There is a shade to flatter every skin tone, from warm tomato (at Proenza Schouler) to cool crimson (Nina Ricci); there is a texture to match every personality, from faded, retro matte (Jonathan Saunders) and positively lacquered (Michael Kors) to lollipop-sheer (Thakoon).
