Though it seems so common these days for there to be animosity between employers and their employees, the workers at a Michigan restaurant display a refreshing example of admiration and respect for their boss. As a matter of fact, the employees of Mr. B's Pancake House in Muskegon, Michigan, think so highly of the restaurant's owner, Dave Barham, that they decided to work a shift without pay just to help him out. They called their effort "Donate a Day."
According to the January 27 Associated Press, the pancake house's lead server, Mary VanDam, cooked up the idea, and her co-workers gladly participated. During the January 18 day shift, 17 of Barham's employees worked for tips only in order to help the restaurant, which had been experiencing decreased patronage lately. All of the company's 31 employees were willing to work the free shift--VanDam related that when she put the idea to the workers, "everyone's hand went up, everyone wanted to do this"--but they agreed to choose only one shift.
What a wonderful idea. It helped the restaurant out, saving Barham $700 in wages, and the employees ended up being compensated, at least in part, in spite of ...
