WITH THIS ISSUE, THE EDITORSHIP changes hands with grateful acknowledgment to the editors who have come before. It seems to us that our mission is as important as ever as we do what we can to address the problems of the semantic environment. For those of us in the U.S., this issue comes on the heels of a presidential election that greatly contributed to the semantic pollution. When Sarah Palin complimented the residents of "real America" she strengthened the two-dimensional, either-or thinking of much of the country. Either you live in "real" America, or you are catapulted into the connotative land of some unspecified alternative. And not to let the victor off the hook, many people voted for "change we can believe in," which is as good as saying "insert your preferences here while I continue speaking in abstractions so high that you can't help but agree with me." Our continued hope is that we can convince political leaders to speak more concretely and when they do not, let us help our fellow voters recognize the ways they are using language to obscure rather than illuminate.
This issue also follows the 56th annual Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture and the attendant symposium, "Creating the Future: Conscious Time Binding for a Better Tomorrow." Douglas Rushkoff ...
