A star may learn swordplay, the harpsichord, or obscure medical jargon for a role, but how many learn to bone a duck? Meryl Streep recently did for her role as Julia Child in this summer's Julie and Julia. Still, she admitted, "I'm not as good a cook as I ought to be."
To find out who excels in the kitchen, we asked celebrities at the Fashion Group International's Night of Stars, a party for the Israeli Film Festival, and the Ace Accessory Awards: Can you cook? Plenty of stars were quick to confess their lack of culinary talent. "I kind of cook breakfast," said Jeremy Piven, "but that's where it ends." Eva Mendes put it more positively: "I can call in an order like nobody else."
Brooke Shields said she cooksbut not confidently. "I'm a little white-knuckled about it. I follow recipes to a T," she said. "My husband goes with the flow and seems to make everything taste a little better." Project Runway' s Tim Gunn is so versatile that he may want to consider a gig on Top Chef. "I cook all the time," he said. "Every night, in fact. I almost never eat out."
