It's tempting to blame your bed for a bad night's sleep, and many a mattress maker fuels the finger-pointing by claiming that its product will all but cure insomnia. But before buying the hype, consider that any new mattress is apt to be better than your old one, according to a new study by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. If you "rest test" that mattress in the store, you'll be especially happy.
In a recent survey of 5,900 Consumer-Reports.org subscribers who bought a new mattress within the past five years, 72 percent who spent at least 10 minutes lying on the mattress in the store were very or completely satisfied once they bought it. Just 62 percent who spent little or no time trying out the bed said they were as happy.

Overall, almost three-quarters of all respondents said sleep improved with their new mattress. Among those who identified themselves as problem sleepers those with back pain, anxiety, or other conditions--43 percent said sleep had improved significantly. Other findings:
