Within its morning newscast on 12 March, Dubai-based Iraqi private Al-Sharqiyah TV highlighted a report saying that "the Central Criminal Court today handed down a three-year prison term to Muntazar al-Zaydi, who threw his shoes at [former] US President George Bush during his visit to Baghdad before the end of his term in office". The TV channel also highlighted statements made by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in the Australian capital, Canberra, to the effect that "the Iraqi security troops are capable of controlling the situation in the country when the US troops are withdrawn."
