A new kind of medical school at the University of California at Merced--one that takes years off the usual path to a medical degree--is the goal of John Garamendi, California's lieutenant governor. "We have a desperate need for more doctors, and this program could significantly lower the cost both to the students and to the state," he said.
A typical MD degree requires four years in undergraduate work, then four years of medical school. This new version would combine the undergrad and graduate degrees. Several schools already have an accelerated degree, and others like Tulane University LA hope to join them.
