Family first? After generations of grad students have accepted conditions of servitude, today's grad students are dismayed at seeing the quality of life for campus academics. Many are questioning their career choice.

A study of PhD students at the University of California showed that only 29% of women and 46% of men found research schools to be family-friendly for professors on the tenure-track. It surveyed almost 8,400 grad students at nine of the ten schools in the UC system from 2006-2007.

Most of the students surveyed--84% of women and 74% of men--reported major concern over whether their future career would have a positive work/life balance.
