Chief academic officers--40% of whom are women--have traditionally been the most likely to move up to president at American colleges and universities. But a new survey indicates that most like it just where they are, thank you, and have no presidential aspirations.

The American Council on Education recently released The CAO Census: A National Profile of Chief Academic Officers based on data collected from more than 1,700 of them at colleges and universities across the country. It is the first census of those considered best suited for the presidency.

Women are 40% of all CAOs, but it varies by level of school. They are 50% at associate's colleges, 38% at master's, 37% at baccalaureate institutions, 33% at special focus institutions and 32% at doctorate-granting institutions.
