adds last three paras -------------------- Brussels, March 1 (CTK) - European Union leaders have not registered a tendency towards protectionism so far, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said after the extraordinary EU summit in Brussels today. The summit was convened by the Czech presidency following agreement with the European Commission. The aim was to agree on a common approach to tackle the impacts of the financial crisis. Europe can cope with the impacts of the current crisis if it takes a joint and coordinated action respecting the existing rules, said Topolanek. "We have to improve the regulation of financial institutions and their supervision," he added. "We need a Europe without barriers, a Europe with rules," Topolanek said. Fears that some states might resort to protectionist measures within the stimulus packages for their economies have arisen after France announced the plan to aid its car makers.
