Apprentice rise bucks national trend.

Notts is bucking the national trend for the number of young people taking part in apprenticeships.

While an estimated 6,000 apprenticeships have been lost in the UK's construction industry alone, Notts' figures are on the rise.

There are 1,098 apprentices living and working in Nottingham, combining on-the-job experience and work-based training, according to the Learning and Skills Council.

This compares to 904 in 2007/8 and 852 in 2006/7.

The decline in apprenticeships across the country is said to be due to a fall in the number of employers willing to take them on.
