TAIPEI, March 2 Asia Pulse - The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) will open a drought response center Monday in anticipation of a possible water shortage this summer due to lower-than-usual rainfall in the past two months, an official said Saturday.
Chen Shen-hsien, director-general of the MOEA's Water Resources Agency, made the remarks after accompanying Premier Liu Chao-shiuan on a visit of Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan County, a major source of potable water in northern Taiwan.
As February's rainfall was only 19 percent of the typical average amount, Chen said, Shihmen Reservoir's water level has fallen far below the minimum supply level.
Given its dwindling water supply, Shihmen Reservoir has now cut its daily raw water supply for industrial and household use to 1.2 million tons from the original 1.7 million tons, Chen said, adding that the supply gap has to be bridged by Feitsui Reservoir in Taipei County.
As to water supply for agricultural use, Chen said his agency will discuss the issue with relevant government departments and hopes to come to a decision next week on whether to restrict water supply for farmland irrigation.
