TAIPEI, March 2 Asia Pulse - Taiwan will take advantage of improved relations with China to pursue closer trade ties with individual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) states, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesman Henry Chen said Sunday.
Chen said that although Taiwan is not an ASEAN dialogue or development partner, ASEAN countries are important trade partners of Taiwan's, and there is room for trade ties to be further strengthened.
"The Foreign Ministry has worked to bolster Taiwan's ties with ASEAN, and we hope that following the recent improvement of the country's relations with China, Taiwan can forge free trade pacts with the ASEAN group," Chen said.
ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan hinted earlier Sunday, however, that the pursuit of free trade pacts would be problematic. He acknowledged that ASEAN members have maintained business and trade ties with Taiwan, but noted that all of them observe a "one China" policy.
