Last week, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton became the first US foreign minister -and the highest level US official -to visit the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Her visit to the headquarters of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, made on the occasion of her first trip overseas as secretary of state, marks a new era in US-Asean relations. As Thailand prepares to host the Asean Summit in its role as Asean chair, the United States looks forward to working with the Thai government on issues of common concern to the Asean community and our country. …
