AN ex-squaddie who rescued a cop from a mob of Rangers casuals has escaped jail for impersonating a policeman.
Tom Bardsley was hailed as a hero for saving the officer's life following last year's UEFA Cup final in Manchester.
But yesterday, he was given a sixmonth prison sentence suspended for two years after trying to skip paying for a train ticket by claiming to be a cop.
Bardsley was also ordered to do 270 hours of community service.
The 24-year-old, father-of-one, was arrested following an incident on a journey from Birmingham to Manchester in September.
