In their February 15 sale of American furniture and decorative arts Skinner will auction another of the eight portrait miniatures of George Washington painted by Robert Field in 1801. As Eleanor Gustafson detailed in her Endnotes column in this magazine last month, the miniatures were commissioned by Martha Washington to present to friends and family; late last year Skinner sold the miniature Martha gave to her step-grand-daughter Sarah "Sally" Stuart to the Yale University Art Gallery for more than $300,000. The nearly identical example being auctioned this month descended in the family of Sally's sister Anne Calvert Stuart and has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.
