When Simon Russell Beale was asked at a Shakespeare Guild event to name the greatest dramatist of all time, he answered Chekhov. "I told them, 'Shakespeare is God, but Chekhov is the best playwright,' " he recalls. "Put them together, and you've got a pretty good double bill."
