The University of Chicago is offering coed dorm rooms this semester, joining about 30 campuses nationally that allow for such housing arrangements.

The pilot program is in response to a student-led initiative and will not be open to freshmen, according to school officials. Thoughts about sexuality and personal choice helped drive the program's creation. It "allows us to meet the needs of students for whom traditional same-sex room assignments are not ideal," said U of C's director of undergraduate housing.
