Moving from grad school to a job in academia used to be automatic, but now grad students are thinking twice before doing it, according to a University of California study.
Many students begin to consider career paths outside the ivory tower while in grad school, according to the 2006-2007 survey of 8,400 PhD students at nine UC campuses. Less than 30% of women and 46% of men surveyed perceived major research universities to be family-friendly places for tenure-track faculty.
