It started this fall with only 14 student-fellows, but a new year-long experimental program has the potential to change the world through social engineering.

The Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative is designed to help highly successful leaders in their 50s and 60s to develop the knowledge, skills and professional relationships needed to become successful social entrepreneurs or leaders of nonprofits. Their interests include social problems of poverty, health, education and the environment.

Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kantor, a professor in Harvard's Business school, heads the program. "This is about deploying a leadership force to have an impact on major social problems," she said. It involves five of the university's professional schools: business, law, government, education and public health.
