Only 10% of current female student athletes are interested in finding a career in intercollegiate athletics, according to a new study on the barriers to women.
The 2007-2008 study asked female student athletes, female sports administrators, female coaches and female officials what they perceived as barriers to woman entering and staying in athletics leadership. The study updated a 1989 initial inquiry.
Results varied by group, but the most common responses were: high family responsibilities, high time requirements for the job, low salaries and low availability of jobs.
