Byline: Jeffrey Slonim PHOTOGRAPHED BY PATRICK McMULLAN
Thanks to the proliferation of reality shows about clutter (and outposts of the Container Store), a perfectly arranged closet has begun to seem like a symbol of a virtuous life. We asked celebrities at the Fashion Group International's Night of Stars, a Wilhelmina Models party, and a Cinema Society screening of Margot at the Wedding to reveal the state of their closets.
Several stars would make an organizational expert cringe. "My way of cleaning is throwing everything into the closet," TA[c]a Leoni says. And designer Jean Paul Gaultier says, "Long skirts and trouserseverything is mixed up. It's a big bordello."
The best-organized stars admit to outsourcing the dirty work. "I have a very, very sweet little girl, and she helps me do that," says Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Ivanka Trump recently had professionals "come in and create a system." And Lance Bass has no compunction about letting his assistant take over: "I just let her go at it. I love it."
Susan Sarandon could use that expertise: "If you know anyone who could help me, please send them right over," she says. "I'm very disorganized."
