The highlight at Sotheby's is also of the bombe variety--the Captain Edward Allen carved and figured mahogany bombe chest-on-chest. Probably made in Salem, Massachusetts, about 1780, it is the only example of its form to originate from the coastal town and has survived in remarkable condition, appearing to retain its original finish, brass hardware, and finials. It is also noteworthy for being one of only six surviving American bombe chest-on-chest (among the others, one is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and one is at Colonial Williamsburg). This piece bears the chalk inscription "Edward Allen" on its backboards, suggesting it was originally owned by the prosperous Salem merchant Edward Allen (1737-1803), in whose family it descended until the early twentieth century, when it was among a group of furniture given to the current owner. The estimate is $1.2 to $1.8 million.
