I was excited to see Susan Shane's story on environmental factors that affect girls' and women's reproductive lives ("Reaching Puberty Early," July/Aug 2008). This is a topic all too often ignored by mainstream media and medical researchers, primarily because the people affected are predominantly women and girls of color and live in low-income neighborhoods. Women of color who have been advocating directly for their communities have been organizing for attention to this critical issue for nearly two decades.

I was disturbed to reach the article's end, however, as the author neatly wraps up her story of addressing her own daughter's early-onset puberty by ridding her household of endocrine-disrupting products. She informs us that her 10-year-old daughter "remains delightfully flat-chested," unlike her classmates, whose "prominent breasts" and lunches packed in plastic ...
