ATLANTA -- Next time a patient comes in with a long list of clinical concerns, suppress the impulse to stop them midway.
"Research has shown that the average number of patient concerns is 3.5. It's not 10 or 15 or 75," according to James A. MacKenzie, Ph.D. "The idea is to exhaust the agenda until the patient stops.
Letting the patient list their concerns "establishes focus."
The next task is for the physician and patient to agree about the order in which to address the patient's issues.
