Joshuah Scott Rutledge, 26, of Oakboro, North Carolina, picked the wrong neighborhood to burglarize. He was first chased from a home he intended to burglarize by an alert 70-year-old woman early on November 23. Her identity and how she frightened Rutledge away has been kept confidential by local police officers.
Determined to ply his trade, the Gaston Gazette reported, Rutledge climbed through the bathroom window of a neighboring home, gaining entry only minutes after his first burglary attempt went awry.
When Phyllis Osborne heard noises that morning she knew someone had entered their home. She awakened her husband Richard, who armed himself with an old shotgun. When Rutledge realized he'd been detected, he pulled down a bedspread to cover himself as he lay on the floor of a guest room.
When Richard Osborne spotted the bedspread on the floor, he knew something was amiss. "I'm very particular," Phyllis Osborne said. "My bed has to be made. Not a wrinkle in it." ...
