On November 19, ABC World News with Charles Gibson aired a story about the tiny town of Possum Trot, Texas. This hamlet in the eastern part of the state claims a population of only about 300 families, and is the home of Bennett Chapel, a Missionary Baptist church of 200 or so members.
In the past 12 years, 25 families in the church (most of whom earn less than $30,000 per year, have children of their own, and live paycheck to paycheck) have adopted and raised a total of 80 abused children from the Texas foster-care system. One couple, Glen and Theresa Lathan, has adopted 10 children!
This journey "to save a generation" began in 1996 when Donna Martin, wife of Bennett Chapel Bishop W.C. Martin, was grieving after her mother's death. Journalist Erin Gieschen reports that during Donna's time of asking God to help her through the grief, the Lord told her to think about "all those children out there who don't have what you had in a mother. I want you to give back to them. Foster and adopt." W.C., Donna, and Donna's sister, Diann Sparks, took the message to heart and began attending classes about children in the foster-care system.
