Charismatic golden-voiced FDR brought about 20 years of Democratic rule when he ran his 1932 campaign against the "Hoover" depression. Yet the depression deepened for the next eight years, and FDR ushered us into WWII. His election base was the "solid south," the labor unions, and the unemployed. His strategy for reelection was "tax and tax, spend and spend, and elect and elect."
It appears that we may be in for another 20 or more years of Democratic rule. The components that will make this permanent majority possible are the black vote (90 percent), the Hispanic vote (67 percent), the labor unions, the welfare vote, the "youth" vote, and probably a small majority of the women's vote.
Obama was no dummy. He ran a brilliant campaign, the results of which may be permanent. He too will now use the FDR strategy of tax and tax, spend and spend, and elect and elect. Helping Obama's strategy along, of course, was a Republican Party that abandoned its basic philosophy of limited government and in so doing committed political suicide.
