Loeb takes the smooth before the rough for winning start to title defence.

S'bastien Loeb picked up where he left off in Wales at the end of last year by starting his 2009 campaign with a win in Rally I-reland. Apart from a small mistake with less than 10 miles to go, the world champion's 48th victory never looked in doubt once he had recovered quickly from a wrong tyre choice for the first three -special stages on Friday morning and Loeb led a Citroen one-two at the finish in Sligo today.
"It's been a really tough rally but I'm very happy to take the 10 points," said Loeb. "Tarmac rallies are especially important to me. This one has been tricky for everyone but now we're here at the finish with maximum points. It's a good start to the season."
Loeb, an expert on sealed roads as -opposed to the loose surfaces that dominate the remaining 11 rounds of the championship, admitted to a scare on the -penultimate stage at Donegal Bay when he slid wide but came to no harm.
