Iran ex-Speaker slams senior commander's remarks on elections

Text of report headlined "Karrubi's reaction to the views of the chief of the General Command Headquarters of the Armed Forces about the presidential elections: Commander! To whom should we complain about your interference in the elections?" published by Iranian newspaper E'temad-e Melli on 28 January

In a letter to Basiji Commander Maj-Gen Seyyed Hasan Firuzabadi, the secretary-general of the National Trust Party [NTP], Mehdi Karrubi, has reacted to his recent remarks.

In the letter, Karrubi reminded Firuzabadi, who is the chief of the General Command Headquarters of the armed forces, about the strict guidance of His Eminence (late) Imam Khomeyni about the military's non-interference in the political process. Karrubi also criticised the commander for his recent remarks about the unsuitability of elderly persons for the presidential position.

He wrote in the letter: Considering that today you have taken over leadership of those militants interfering in the elections, to whom should I complain?
