The Problem
A colleague notices my 2-day-old cold symptoms and suggests nonpharmacologic treatments--vitamin C and zinc. I recall the data on zinc (the jury is still out on this one) but cannot recall a specific study on vitamin C. "Mindful Physician, heal thyself," she charges.
The Question
In patients with the common cold, does vitamin C decrease the severity and duration of cold symptoms?
Seeking evidence: Using PubMed (www.pubmed.gov), the phrase "vitamin C AND common cold" yields 190 hits. The first two articles appear important: a randomized trial of vitamin C versus placebo from Australia and a Cochrane systematic review.
