SNOWMASS, COLO. -- Indications for implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy will be expanded and simplified as a result of the recently halted Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial-II (MADIT-II), Dr. Roger A. Winkle predicted at a conference sponsored by the American College of Cardiology.
The message of MADIT-II is that all patients with coronary heart disease and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 30% or less should receive a prophylactic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) regardless of whether or not they've had syncope or a life-threatening arrhythmia.
