In the overexposed biography of Georgia O'Keeffe, there remain a few relatively undisturbed corners. Her devotion to Charles Demuth is one. An exhaustive study of their relationship, however, is inconceivable; far too many documents are lacking. Their absence is at least reassuring, reminding us that much of an artist's life and work is ultimately private and inaccessible. Artists--like everyone else--generally safeguard their intimate thoughts and affections, anxieties and fears. O'Keeffe and Demuth certainly did. But what we do know of their friendship illuminates the art of both. (1)
