Despite an effort to boost the status of women on campus, only one of 25 MIT faculty members granted tenure this year is a woman. Women are now about 16% of MIT's tenured faculty, compared with 10.5% a decade ago.
MIT President Susan Hockfield called the photo of the lone woman among a sea of men "unsettling," but said it does not signify a change in MIT's pledge to hire more women and improve their tenure rates.
