There's no skirting around the issue: the construction industry is battling through some lean times. Compared to the boom seen in the real estate markets a few years ago, the current climate is nearing depressing. Foreclosures are rampant, new projects are being curtailed and for the eleventh time in a year, as well as the third straight month, construction spending declined in May.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Census Bureau report for May, for the first five months of 2008, construction spending totaled $416.6 billion, 5.1% below the total for the same period last year. Residential construction spending has been hard hit, dipping to $378.9 ...
