Most people with diabetes should be considered for statin therapy regardless of whether or not they already have cardiovascular disease, say researchers.

An analysis of 14 randomised trials has shown that statins cut the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in people with diabetes, even those with low cholesterol.

A team of researchers from Oxford reviewed the studies involving more than 90,000 people, 18,686 of whom had diabetes.

They found a 9% proportional reduction in all-cause mortality per mmol/l reduction in LDL cholesterol in participants with diabetes, which was similar to the 13% reduction in those who did not have diabetes.
