Bobbi Brown's foolproof way to wear strong lipstick.
It may be festive, but bold lipstick can also be truly intimidating. That's why we asked makeup artist Bobbi Brown, the queen of naturals and author of Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual (Springboard Press), to prove that bright lipstick is flattering on everyone. "They take some getting used to, but bright colors are the quickest way to a polished look," says Brown. She recommends choosing a shade based on the natural color of your lips rather than your skin tone. Texture can also make a big difference. "A creamy lipstick with a slightly matte finish gives you rich color and is less likely to bleed into lines around your mouth the way a gloss can," says Brown. And while strong lipstick should be worn with blush to balance the intensity, Brown notes that eye makeup should be kept to a minimum. "Bright lips speak for themselves," she says.

Select a lipstick shade based on your lips' natural color. Women with pale lips should try coral or cherry red; for reddish lips, try hot pink, orange, or cranberry; for dark lips, try brick red or a burgundy shade.
If your lips are chapped or flaking, gently rub them with a damp washcloth to remove the dead skin. Pat on a drop of eye cream, which is more moisturizing than most lip balms. Let it absorb for a few minutes.
