Byline: KATE SULLIVAN
As with Cate Blanchett, there's something about Keira Knightley's face, frame, and demeanor that makes her perfect for period moviesand their elaborate costumes. Offscreen, however, she looks like she's never seen a powdered wig. A bright blue dress with a spritz of stiff lace trim is structured; a wrap top with rolled-up khakis is pure London street. And while her red-carpet style can be summed up as "romantic"she favors rich strapless gowns with layers, frills, pleats, and full skirtsit never seems as if Knightley is repeating the same old look. No offense to talented Hollywood costume designers, but we prefer Knightley in the aughts.
On the Rocks
She is not engaged (she doesn't even acknowledge in print that she has a boyfriend), but Knightley knows how to draw attention to a ring. Rather than necklaces and bracelets, she wears big, chunky baubles on her hands, often choosing floral designs like Chanel's Fil de Camelia and a vinelike Van Cleef & Arpels band with diamond blossoms. Knightley also redefines the "ring finger" by wearing large rocks on her index finger, making them even more visible when she poses.
