After major advances in women's college sports for the last two decades, women are beginning to lose ground, according to a new NCAA report.

The biennial gender equity report found that Division I schools directed a smaller proportion of their budgets to women's sports in 2005-6 (34%) than in 2003-4 (37%).

Data points to several factors contributing to the decrease: the large amount of money spent on football and men's basketball, the slowdown of female participation in high school and college athletics and a tough economy.
