Philippines: Lawmaker pushes for early voting for 2010 elections, creation of Mindanao Economic Development Authority.
Section: General News - A Mindanao solon is batting for a system of early voting in the country for the 2010 national elections to increase voter turnout and make the election process much easier for the public.
Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez has filed House Bill no. 5578 which provides early voting for the 2010 national polls, saying "the basic argument in favor of early voting is that it increases turnout by making it easier to vote." Citing a study conducted in the United States, Rodriguez said that in the 24 states in the US with no excuse absentee voting, turnout increased in 2004 in the aggregate by 6.7 percent, and by 6.2 percent in the other states. …
